Changing employee
expectations, increasing globalization, new technologies and a need for agility
in the face of a turbulent business environment means that tomorrow’s workplace
will be barely recognizable from today. HR will need to respond accordingly.
Apart from
some traditional HR functional roles like- handling recruitment, managing
payroll, and looking after some organizational requirements, an HR executive
today, plays an important role in bridging up the gap between its
employees and the management.
“Our progress as a nation can be no swifter
than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.” -
John F. Kennedy.
I believe as Kennedy rightly says, our human mind is our
fundamental resource so we use it to develop our skills to adapt to the
changing scenario that comes our way.
Arriving from a small
town of Assam, no one ever dreamt that ‘CA Anzar’, an introvert boy, would ever
do something constructive in life. While schooling in IV League Academy, Prof.
Narayan Shankar once spotted me in our library. He asked me, “Why aren’t you
participating in the Debate Competition? I was scared and fragile. I answered,
“Sir, I’m not confident enough”. He smiled and gave my name for the competition.
In that year, to everyone’s surprise I received the 1st position .
From that day, there was NO TURNING BACK, I understood all I
needed was to accept and recognize my skills and capabilities.
With time I dwelt and changed to adapt to the rapid changes
I had to face as an HR executive.
1. Understand
business, and not just people.
Common as it sounds,
Human Resource is associated with understanding people, that is an important
factor, I learnt that apart from managing and organizing resource requirements,
it is also necessary to understand the business market and its impact on the
organizations and the strategy needed to do so.
2. Adapt to the
changes in technology.
With the bombardment of technology in all domains, an HR
executive must adopt and understand the various technological trends in
order to manage them. Social media is one platform for recruitment and
engagement that will extensively drive HR technology in the coming years.
3. Multitasking.
In HR, I have noticed many new HR Executives
replacing the old lot. Priorities and business needs to be moving faster and
changing even faster. Manager ‘A’ who needs someone hired doesn’t much care if
you’re already helping manager ‘B’ who needs someone fired. You need to be able
to handle it all, all at once. This is possible only being a multi tasker .
4. Thinking of an
HR Executive.
HR serves, the business strategy and impacts the entire organization. It’s
important for HR executives to know what that strategy is and what makes
the business run so that the approach to HR can be tailored accordingly.
5.
Listen and Communicate.
It is very important to be a good
listener in an HR Job. As a Senior HR executive, I make sure that I
listen to all my employees and management so that the gap is bridged
accurately. Along with listening I make sure that I have a good rapport and
devise good communication skills to understand as well as communicate right to
the point.
Along with these skills, - organizing,
negotiating, conflict management and problem solving, focus, are some diverse
skills that an HR executive must possess.
